U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged on the 4th, local time, that the war with Iran was largely behind his party's midterm election defeat, while warning that Democrats, who control both the House and the Senate, would face "ruin" if they pursue his impeachment.
Speaking to reporters at a White House banquet hall construction site on the day after the midterm elections, Trump was asked whether he agreed with Vice President JD Vance's remarks that the war with Iran caused the election loss. "I think that's mostly true. It [the war] pushed gasoline prices up a little bit in the short term," Trump replied.
"At the same time, if we had to do it again, we'd have to do it again, because in the long run, that's the only answer. We couldn't let Iran have a nuclear weapon," he added.
Asked whether he was considering replacing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who led the Iran war, Trump said, "No. He's doing a good job."
By making these remarks, he drew a clear line against any replacement at a time when Democrats are targeting Hegseth as their primary target within the Trump administration.
Regarding the possibility of Democrats pushing for impeachment, Trump said, "It's going to ruin the Democrats."
While some factions within the Democratic Party are demanding that Trump be impeached over various allegations of misconduct, calls for caution remain substantial.
