Spanish golf star Jon Rahm, who has parted ways with LIV Golf, has expressed his desire to return to the PGA Tour.
However, as the PGA Tour has not opened a path for his return, it is unlikely things will go as Rahm hopes.
Rahm is set to compete in the DP World Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (Abu Dhabi Golf Championship at Yas Links), which opens in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on November 5.
According to golf media outlet Golf Digest, Rahm spoke at a press conference held at the tournament venue, Yas Links Golf Club, on November 4, the day before the opening, saying, "I want to return to the PGA Tour, but I haven't discussed with the PGA Tour yet if there is a path for me to return."
Brooks Koepka of the United States, who also transferred to LIV Golf like Rahm, previously returned to the PGA Tour after paying 50 million dollars (approximately 67.2 billion won).
Rahm said, "I am willing to pay that kind of money," but added, "That is just a hypothetical. I am very doubtful that I would receive an offer under the same conditions as Koepka."
Even if Rahm pays a fine and returns to the PGA Tour, he cannot avoid a one-year suspension.
Rahm added, "If I have to serve a one-year suspension, playing on the DP World Tour during that period is also a fine idea."
Rahm, who won the Masters—a major tournament—in April 2023, shocked PGA Tour players and officials when he announced his transfer to the startup golf tour LIV Golf in December of that year.
Since then, Rahm won four times on LIV Golf, but failed to win any other tournaments, including major championships.
LIV Golf is undergoing bankruptcy proceedings due to the suspension of financial support from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).
While LIV Golf is looking for ways to recruit new investors, take over the stakes of existing players, and resume the tour in 2027, Rahm has decided not to participate.
