In response to North Korea denying its involvement as the mastermind behind the Binance cryptocurrency hacking incident, the United States countered on November 3 (local time) that "North Korea's cybercrime is a global problem."
A U.S. State Department official responded to an inquiry regarding the statement made by North Korea's Workers' Party of Korea Department Vice Director Kim Yo-jong, stating, "The issue of North Korean cybercrime is a global problem affecting businesses, countries, and jurisdictions worldwide, including the United States."
The official pointed out, "In recent years, North Korea has increasingly relied on cybercrime to evade international sanctions and fund its illegal weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs," adding, "Cryptocurrency theft and money laundering are a critical part of this strategy."
The official further emphasized, "The United States is working closely with like-minded countries to deter and condemn disruptive and destabilizing activities in cyberspace," and noted, "To mitigate North Korea's cyber threats, it is crucial for governments, network security personnel, and the general public to maintain vigilance and cooperate together."
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified North Korea as the mastermind behind the hacking of Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, which resulted in the theft of 6.3 billion dollars (approx. 8.4 trillion won) worth of cryptocurrency, and announced in a press release on October 31 that the perpetrator is known as the elite North Korean hacking group "TraderTraitor."
In response, Kim stated in a release on November 2, "The U.S. misleading international public opinion as if all cyber fraud incidents occurring around the world are our doing clearly constitutes a grave political provocation against us."
Regarding the FBI mentioning the North Korean hacking group "TraderTraitor" as the perpetrator, Kim argued, "They are attempting to portray us as a 'cybercrime state,'" and claimed, "However, the U.S. claims are absurd fabrications and nothing new."
