Soon, when you sell stocks on the domestic stock market, you will be able to receive the proceeds from the sale the next day.

According to the "Roadmap for Shortening the Securities Market Settlement Cycle" announced by the Korea Exchange, the stock settlement date will be shortened from two days after the transaction date to one day.

For example, currently, if you sell stocks on Monday, you can withdraw the funds on Wednesday, and if you sell stocks on Friday, withdrawal is possible on Tuesday based on trading days.

The Korea Exchange plans to overhaul this system for the first time in about 50 years since its implementation in 1972.

Demands to shorten the stock settlement cycle have been steadily raised by investors.

In particular, petitions have continued, centered on retail investors who want to use their stock sale proceeds even a day sooner.

In addition, as the United States and the European Union have moved to transition their stock settlement cycles to one day, momentum has built up following an instruction by President Lee Jae-myung last March to review the shortening of the settlement cycle.

Initially, it was projected that the settlement cycle shortening system would be implemented starting in October 2027, but it is known to have been delayed slightly considering the exchange's insufficient infrastructure preparation and the positions of global investors.

However, if the system is introduced, the deadline for investors to pay for stock purchases will also be brought forward by one day.

For investors engaged in unverified margin trading, payments used to be made up to two business days from the purchase date, but now margin debts must be paid by the next business day.

In addition, the timing of forced liquidation due to non-payment will also be brought forward from three business days to two business days.

The final stock purchase date to secure rights such as dividends or paid-in capital increases will also be changed from two days before the record date to one day before.

The exchange also decided to lower the interest rate on loans secured by stock sale proceeds compared to the current rate.

Korea Securities Finance Corporation will provide funding required for loans to securities firms, and based on this, securities firms will offer them to investors at mid-to-high 5% annual interest rates.
