A high-risk pregnant woman whose amniotic sac ruptured at 21 weeks of pregnancy gave birth inside an ambulance with the assistance of fire authorities.
According to the Daejeon Fire Headquarters, an emergency call was received by 119 at around 7:15 p.m. yesterday (November 2) from an official at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic stating that an emergency dispatch was needed as a high-risk pregnant woman was nearing childbirth.
The pregnant woman in her 30s, surnamed A, was at 21 weeks of pregnancy and had experienced severe abdominal pain along with the rupture of her amniotic waters that day, but emergency delivery was practically difficult at that hospital.
Fire authorities searched hospitals in Daejeon and neighboring areas, but because the pregnancy was at such an early stage of premature birth, no hospital responded that immediate admission and delivery were possible.
In the meantime, woman A suffered severe labor pains while waiting inside the ambulance, and an emergency delivery took place inside the ambulance with the help of emergency medical technicians.
At the time, fire authorities had deployed two ambulances and six emergency medical technicians in preparation for the worst-case scenario of woman A giving birth.
Upon receiving a response from a hospital in Sejong that admission was possible, fire authorities transferred woman A and the newborn to this hospital at around 9:16 p.m., about two hours after the initial report.
The Daejeon Fire Headquarters stated, "Because it was an emergency situation and we could not just wait for a hospital transfer, the EMTs delivered the baby inside the ambulance," adding, "Currently, both the mother and the newborn are receiving treatment at the hospital."
