The refrigerator hacking incident that occurred at supermarkets in France last month has repeated itself in Belgium and Luxembourg, the English-language Belgian newspaper The Brussels Times reported on November 2 local time.

Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize confirmed that IT issues targeting refrigeration systems occurred across about 40 stores nationwide between the night of November 1 and the early hours of November 2, causing temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to surge sharply.

Carrefour Belgium also stated that similar incidents occurred at 15 of its stores.

According to Belgian French-language media RTL Info, a significant number of store managers received warnings from Delhaize around 4:00 AM on November 2 stating that temperatures in the refrigeration equipment were rising.

It was reported that the temperatures in the refrigerators and freezers at these stores rose to 15°C (59°F).

Store managers and employees who were affected reportedly rushed to their stores to minimize inventory losses, while some stores mobilized refrigerated trucks to preserve their goods.

Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch parent company of Delhaize, also announced on the same day that IT issues occurred in refrigerators and freezers at dozens of supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg.

According to Reuters, the company confirmed that the temperatures of the cooling systems had risen and stated that it is currently investigating the cause of the incident.

The company had previously reported a cybersecurity incident to Dutch police last month.

Previously in France, a cyberattack during the night of October 11 to 12 raised the temperatures of supermarket refrigerators from multiple companies to 50°C (122°F), causing massive damage to about 700 stores.
