Irish female track and field athlete Ciara Mageean, who won the gold medal in the women's 1,500m at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, passed away at the age of 34 on November 1 (KST) after a battle with cancer.

British media outlets including the BBC reported, "Mageean, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in May of last year, has passed away," adding, "Many organizations, including Athletics Ireland, have shared messages of condolence."

Mageean was a leading figure in Irish women's track and field.

She drew high expectations by winning the silver medal in the women's 1,500m at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics. After debuting on the senior stage, she fell into a slump due to ankle injuries, but successfully staged a comeback after undergoing surgery in 2013.

Mageean, who achieved significant results in every international competition she entered, continued active external engagements even after her colon cancer diagnosis last year, giving hope to many patients.

Last month, she held her wedding ceremony with her longtime partner, Thomas Moran.
