Arsenal has broken its "Anfield jinx" after 14 years, climbing to the top of the English Premier League (EPL).

Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Liverpool thanks to a winning goal by Kai Havertz in the 9th round of the 2026-2027 EPL away match held at Anfield in Liverpool, UK, today (November 2).

With this win, Arsenal increased their season points to 24 (8 wins, 1 loss), surpassing Manchester City (21 points, 7 wins, 2 losses) to take the lead in the league.

The team quickly bounced back from the humiliation of being eliminated from the League Cup (Carabao Cup) quarterfinals following a penalty shootout loss to Fleetwood Town of League Two (fourth tier) in the Round of 16 match held on October 28.

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta
For Arsenal, which achieved its first EPL title in 22 years last season, the victory against Liverpool holds even greater significance as it finally broke their stubborn winless streak at Anfield.

This marks Arsenal's first win in an EPL away match at Anfield in about 14 years, since September 2012 (a 2-0 victory).

According to sports statistics provider Opta, Arsenal had recorded 5 draws and 8 losses in 13 EPL away matches at Anfield since their 2012 victory.

Among these, six matches (3 draws, 3 losses) were played under manager Mikel Arteta, who took the helm at Arsenal in December 2019.

Ironically, Arteta, who was a midfielder during his playing days, was the captain of Arsenal during that victory against Liverpool 14 years ago.

The decisive moment came in the 16th minute of the first half.

Following a high press that intercepted the opponent's ball, Declan Rice delivered a sharp, low cross from the right side of the penalty area, which Havertz easily tapped in with his left foot from the left side of the goal.

After conceding the opener, Liverpool applied intense pressure on Arsenal, but Arsenal managed the game stably to fend off the opponent's attacks and maintained their lead until the end.

Liverpool also lacked good fortune, as Florian Wirtz's free kick hit the crossbar in the 39th minute of the first half.

With this goal, Havertz became the all-time top-scoring German player in the EPL.

Havertz, who debuted in the EPL wearing the Chelsea uniform in 2020, has scored 46 goals in 172 league appearances up to this day, surpassing Ilkay Gundogan (45 goals in 221 matches), who formerly played for Manchester City.
