Actor Jeon Do-yeon is aiming for her first-ever win at the U.S. Gotham Awards with the film "Possible Love."
On the nomination list for the 36th Gotham Awards announced by The Gotham Film & Media Institute on October 27 (local time), Jeon Do-yeon will compete for the trophy against 10 actors, including John Malkovich in "Wild Horse Nine," Mahershala Ali in "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother," Gillian Anderson in "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma," John Early in "Maddie's Secret," and Julianne Moore in "The Debut."
The Gotham Awards determines the winner of its Outstanding Lead Performance category as a single honor without distinction of gender.
Jeon Do-yeon's Gotham Awards nomination is meaningful in itself. Amid the growing visibility of "Possible Love" entering the Oscar race, she is the sole acting nominee for the film at the Gotham Awards, considered the first major ceremony of the season.
Momentum is crucial in award ceremonies, whether in South Korea or the United States. Earning a nomination or securing a win exerts an intangible influence on nominations and awards at other ceremonies. In particular, for the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, which play a decisive role on the road to the Academy Awards, thousands of actors and film industry professionals cast their ballots, making it important to ride the momentum and atmosphere of awards season.

Jeon Do-yeon's performance also generated significant buzz when "Possible Love" was invited to the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival in September. Her powerful and delicate acting, which dominated the entire film, aligned with the movie's thematic message. Although she was mentioned as a strong contender for Best Actress until the very end of the festival, the honor went to Mathilde Arcel in "Woman Unknown". However, Mathilde Arcel was not even nominated in the acting category at this year's Gotham Awards.
In addition to Outstanding Lead Performance, "Possible Love" earned nominations in three categories at the Gotham Awards, including Best International Feature and Best Screenplay. This year's ceremony will take place on November 30 in New York.
Earlier, U.S. outlet The Hollywood Reporter spotlighted Jeon Do-yeon's acting career and mentioned the possibility of her becoming the first Korean actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The outlet praised her, stating, "It is difficult to imagine any other actor in the role of Mi-ok. Jeon delivers an astonishingly human and inventive performance in every scene," adding, "Her acting defies simple interpretation through any facial expression or tone of voice. It is a performance that paradoxically breaks your heart most when she is at her happiest."
After a limited theatrical release in South Korea on September 23, "Possible Love" will meet viewers worldwide on November 6 via its primary platform, Netflix.
