U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the outcome of Brazil's presidential election, won by left-wing leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, calling it a disgrace for the country.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., before departing for a midterm election campaign rally on the 29th (local time), President Trump said, "The presidential election held in Brazil was disgraceful."
The remark disparaged the outcome of the Brazilian election, which Lula won after right-wing candidate Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who was defeated in the race, fled to the United States.
When asked whether he recognizes President Lula's victory, President Trump did not answer, instead stating, "I don't want to comment on that right now, but this election was a massive embarrassment for the people of Brazil."
President Trump went on to target President Lula, saying, "I watched the election and just let it be. I was asked by that incumbent president (Lula) not to take sides." He added, "I didn't take sides, but watching what happened in Brazil, it was a disgrace."
Noting the sharp decline in Brazil's stock market following President Lula's victory, President Trump remarked, "I think it was a deeply dishonorable situation for Brazil."
Previously, on the 26th, President Trump also claimed regarding the Brazilian election results, saying, "It looks rigged" and "It looked truly, truly corrupt."
