Yesterday afternoon, a station employee in his 30s, identified as A, was arrested on charges of wielding a weapon against a female colleague and inflicting serious injuries at the station office of Wondang Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
According to police investigations, A reportedly stated that after the victim told him he smelled of cigarettes, he sprayed air freshener on himself, became angry, and committed the crime after taking an excessive amount of his prescribed psychiatric medication.
However, A is also known to have told police that he does not remember the exact moment of the attack.
Police investigations revealed that at the time of the incident, when the victim entered the break room with the station master to have a discussion, A immediately followed them inside and swung the weapon.
The victim, who sustained injuries to her neck and face, regained consciousness overnight after undergoing multiple emergency surgeries, but she is still receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
[Victim's Husband: Who goes on a stabbing rampage, slashing someone dozens of times, just because someone mentioned they smelled like cigarettes? There was zero supervision or monitoring of an individual who routinely carried a weapon.]
Based on A's statement that he "always carried two weapons to protect himself in case someone attacked him," police are also looking into the possibility of a premeditated crime.
Investigators have also secured testimonies from people around them stating that prior to the incident, the victim had requested the company to separate them due to work-related conflicts.
Police, who have applied for an arrest warrant for A on charges of attempted murder, also plan to investigate suspicions that the victim's request for a workplace separation was ignored.
