A woman in her 60s has been sentenced to prison for killing her husband after suffering years of domestic violence.

On October 29, Judge Shin Sang-ryeol of Criminal Division 12 at the Incheon District Court sentenced 69-year-old Defendant A, who had been indicted on charges of murder, to 5 years in prison.

The court explained, "The defendant harbored resentment due to her husband's constant domestic violence and verbal abuse following their marriage, but endured it all her life to raise their children." The court added, "Her statement after the crime—'Living together like this only brings pain to our children, and I thought now was the best opportunity to die'—speaks volumes about her grueling and difficult life."

However, the court stated the reason for sentencing as follows: "While there are mitigating circumstances such as the motive for the crime and the children's pleas for leniency, a punishment commensurate with choosing the extreme method of murder is inevitable."

Defendant A is accused of strangling her husband in his 70s, identified as B, with a necktie at their home in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 10:00 PM on April 27.

Investigations showed that Defendant A committed the crime after being assaulted by her husband and subjected to verbal abuse on the same day.

After killing her husband, Defendant A wrote a suicide note and attempted to take her own life, but failed, and ultimately contacted her children to turn herself in to the police.

During police questioning, Defendant A reportedly stated that she committed the crime because she had been subjected to physical and verbal abuse by her husband.
