A man in his 70s who set fire to two buildings in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, injuring 19 people, has been transferred to the prosecutors' office.
The Seoul Suseo Police Station announced today (October 29) that they have transferred a man in his 70s, surnamed A, to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on charges of arson resulting in injury to an inhabited building and attempted murder.
During his transfer to the prosecutors' office, A shouted, "I told the police about a patent fraud, but they didn't investigate. Where else would something like this happen, what kind of country is this?"
When asked why he set the fires, he replied, "Stop talking about that," and when asked if he felt sorry for the victims, he shouted in English, "Shut up."
Throughout the police investigation, A consistently claimed that his motive for the crime was that he had been scammed by a patent corporation.
A is accused of setting fire to two buildings in Yeoksam-dong in succession at around 11:55 AM on October 20, injuring 19 people.
Among them, a patent attorney was transported to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and is currently receiving treatment.
When applying for the arrest warrant, the police initially applied only charges related to arson. However, after securing victim statements during subsequent investigations that A had looked for a specific person before setting the fires, the police added attempted murder charges to his transfer.
In addition, the police have checked whether A has any mental illness and deployed profilers to track the motive of the crime.
Considering the severity of the damage and sufficient evidence of the crime, the police held a identity disclosure deliberation committee yesterday (October 28) and decided to disclose A's identity on the morning of November 3.
