Actor Kim Minha is set to meet global audiences with an intense emotional outburst and a dramatic transformation unlike anything she has shown before.
On the morning of October 28, a press conference for the new Netflix original series "Dead-End Job" was held at Fairmont Ambassador Seoul in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Director Kim Da-min and creator Han Jun-hee attended the event alongside actors Kim Minha and Lee Hee Jun.
"Dead-End Job" is a survival-horror series set around Spider Labor, a bizarre temporary staffing agency that offers starting pay at 50 times the minimum hourly wage, following a young man named Hyeok-jun (played by Lee Jae-wook) who is sent into nightmarish workplaces.
Kim Minha stars as Ji-yoon, Hyeok-jun's younger sister and a realistic character who fears poverty far more than ghosts. Explaining her reason for choosing the project, Kim Minha said, "When I first read the script, it was a genre I had never seen anywhere before. The stage directions, which required relying on imagination for more than 80 percent, felt fascinating."
Regarding her acting transformation compared to her previous works, she said, "While I played characters who struggled while holding back and suppressing their emotions in projects like 'Pachinko' and 'Light Shop,' Ji-yoon is someone who lets everything out without a filter. I felt I had never really shown such an explosive side, so I had high hopes that I could present a new image."
She continued regarding her similarities to the character, saying, "I was deeply drawn to the line, 'Are you scared of ghosts? Becoming broke is scarier.' I am also scared of poverty and afraid of being unable to set foot in reality. Figuring out how to live well in reality is a daily assignment for me, so I felt that side of her resembles me. Ji-yoon is a mature person who is braver than I am and overcomes her trauma wisely."
Creator Han Jun-hee voiced his strong trust in the actor, saying, "I have been watching actor Kim Minha as a fan since before 'Pachinko.' While she had previously taken on roles with troubled backstories or varied emotional depth, I thought it would be exciting to see her act like a pitcher throwing straight fastballs, just like Ji-yoon, so I cast her."
"Dead-End Job" marks the first full-length series directed by Kim Da-min, who wrote the screenplay for the Netflix series "A Killer Paradox" and drew attention with the film "FAQ." In addition, director Han Jun-hee, who has showcased a solid creative world through Netflix series such as "D.P." and "Weak Hero Class 1," served as the creator. Lee Jae-wook plays Hyeok-jun, a young man who jumps into an ultra-high-paying day-labor gig to make ends meet and encounters bizarre incidents. Go Min-si portrays Yeon-joo, who lingers around Spider Labor and approaches Hyeok-jun, while Kim Minha plays Hyeok-jun's younger sister Ji-yoon, a realist who fears being broke more than ghosts. Lee Hee Jun transforms into the boss who runs the suspicious employment agency Spider Labor.
Consisting of eight episodes, "Dead-End Job" will be released on Netflix at 5 PM on October 30.
