Finally, individuals who stole over 600kg of sweet pumpkins from someone else's field made an absurd claim in court.
In late October of last year, two people in their 60s, A and B, were put on trial on charges of loading 24 sacks of sweet pumpkins—weighing approximately 660kg—onto a truck across three separate occasions over four days in a sweet pumpkin field in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province.
During the trial, the two defendants pleaded not guilty, claiming they took the sweet pumpkins believing they had grown naturally or had been discarded.
However, the court determined that the presence of netting installed around the field to prevent wild animals from entering should have made it clear that someone was managing the property.
Furthermore, the court rejected their not-guilty plea based on several factors: 660kg is an excessively large amount to be considered naturally grown, and the defendants themselves stated that they tasted the pumpkins, found them to be in good condition, and therefore took more.
The court sentenced each of the two individuals to six months in prison, suspended for one year.
