A man in his 40s who murdered his romantic partner a year after she reported him for stalking claimed during police interrogation that the crime was impulsive.
Through a media notice, the Daejeon Provincial Police Agency stated that the man in his 40s, identified as A, who was emergency arrested on murder charges, confessed to the crime, stating, "I committed the crime impulsively while arguing with the victim."
Suspect A is accused of assaulting and strangling a woman in her 40s, identified as B, to death at B's home in Jung-gu, Daejeon, on the afternoon of October 24, and then fleeing.
Police plan to investigate the specific motive behind the crime while checking whether it was premeditated through digital forensics of his mobile phone.
They are also reviewing whether to apply additional charges beyond murder through further investigation.
After the crime, A removed the SIM card from his mobile phone, took a taxi toward Incheon International Airport, and then fled to Gangneung, Gangwon Province, where he was apprehended at a lodging establishment around 7:40 a.m. on October 25.
Police stated that A had not issued any airline tickets and that no attempts to smuggle himself out of the country have been confirmed so far.
The victim, B, reported A to 112 for stalking in October of last year, but later expressed her wish not to have him punished, leading the police to close the case without sending it to the prosecution in November of the same year.
A 112 report was also filed in December of the same year during an argument between the two, but police concluded the case at the scene after determining there were no criminal charges.
Police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for A today (October 26).
They also plan to conduct an autopsy on B tomorrow (October 27) and review whether A meets the requirements for the disclosure of his identity.
