The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it will raise the disaster crisis alert for storm and flood damage from "Attention" to "Caution" for Jeju and the southern coastal regions, effective at 6:00 PM today (October 24).

The affected areas include five cities and provinces: Jeju, South Jeolla Province, Gwangju, Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province.

This measure is intended to preemptively prepare for the northward approach of the 30th Typhoon Champi.

Earlier at 4:00 PM today, preliminary typhoon advisories were issued for the outer waters far south of Jeju Island and the outer waters far east of the South Sea.

Due to the influence of the typhoon, heavy rainfalls of over 100 millimeters are forecasted, accompanied by strong winds mainly centered around Jeju and the southern coast.

The ministry decided to elevate the crisis alert following a countermeasures meeting with relevant agencies.

Additionally, following Jeju, the ministry plans to dispatch additional on-site situation management officers to South Jeolla Province, Gwangju, Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province to inspect local government response efforts and support on-the-ground management.
