Airbnb, the world's largest home-sharing platform, has announced a ban on hosts making "excessive" checkout chore requests, such as washing dishes or organizing bedding, according to CNN, BBC, and other media outlets.

Under the updated Airbnb policies, hosts will no longer be allowed to require guests to perform tasks that "require significant effort or time, or are typically performed by cleaning professionals."

Airbnb provided examples of tasks that can no longer be required of guests, including washing and putting away dishes, taking the trash outside, and stripping the bed sheets.

While hosts can still set up seven basic rules regarding maximum occupancy and quiet hours, and specify additional requests, a large portion of checkout cleanup will effectively be removed from guests' obligations.

Hosts will also be prohibited from arbitrarily imposing fines on guests for violating house rules.

The new regulations will apply to all reservations made after November 20.

Explaining the background of the revision, Airbnb stated, "There was feedback that the rules set by properties were confusing, burdensome, and difficult to manage."

In fact, some Airbnb guests have previously voiced complaints about having to complete meticulous cleanup before checking out.

Recently in the United States, controversy sparked after a video went viral showing an Airbnb host in Georgia criticizing a guest for not putting the TV remote back in its place.

Guests have generally reacted with approval to Airbnb's policy revision.

A female influencer in Minnesota, U.S., shared on social media, "I once stayed at an Airbnb and was asked to do an hour's worth of cleaning before checking out. I don't want to do that on vacation."

On the other hand, Rosanna Imbrogno, a "Superhost" operating an Airbnb property in Rome, Italy, argued on social media, "This is not about obligations, but about good manners. Even when I stay at a hotel, I clean up, strip the bed sheets, and take out the trash."
