The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has completed reinforcement work on sports facilities, including Gocheok Sky Dome, following expert consultation in response to safety management issues raised by the Board of Audit and Inspection. This is the structure supporting the circular ceiling of the Gocheok Dome in Seoul.
The Board of Audit and Inspection pointed out that 23 out of 466 structural elements that should be connected in a straight line were bent. It noted that during the reinforcement process, only one side was reinforced—contrary to the results of the detailed safety diagnosis—resulting in insufficient bearing capacity.
In an official statement, the Seoul Metropolitan Government explained that the originally recommended reinforcement method was difficult to implement because it overlapped with the roof cables. Consequently, the city completed the reinforcement using an alternative method after consulting with experts.
The city also stated that next month it will commission the Korean Society of Steel Construction to verify the adequacy of the reinforcement method, taking into account disaster scenarios such as heavy snowfall.
Regarding the audit finding that wind pressure was applied lower than actual levels during the remodeling of the Jamsil Olympic Stadium main stadium, the city responded that wind loads were applied in accordance with Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport standards at the time of design. It added that wind tunnel tests conducted since July of this year confirmed that the previously applied wind load values were appropriate.
The city stated that it will re-verify ultimate safety by reflecting the actual strength of the roof steel frames, vowing to ensure that citizens can use sports facilities with peace of mind through follow-up measures.
