Cheong Wa Dae stated that President Lee Jae-myung's social media post the previous day (October 21)—which utilized responses from generative AI Gemini regarding whether the head of the Major Crimes Investigation Agency should attend Cabinet meetings—was an instance of "using AI as a tool to find facts," adding that "claims that he is running state affairs by relying on AI are a distortion."
Earlier, President Lee posted on social media the previous day under the title "I Asked Gemini," introducing clauses of the Government Organization Act relevant to the issue and writing that "arguments against attendance are an unconstitutional far-fetched claim."
Cheong Wa Dae explained that AI was merely used in the process to look up relevant grounds, such as statutory provisions, and that the overarching substance of the argument expressed President Lee's own thoughts.
Sung Ki-hong, Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Communication, said at a briefing that day, "President Lee previously stated publicly during the Cabinet meeting on October 13 that '[the attendance of heads of investigative agencies at Cabinet meetings] is a natural matter under the Government Organization Act and the Constitution,'" adding, "This was President Lee's philosophy and resolve, expressed directly to the public during a live broadcast."
He emphasized, "The post President Lee uploaded to social media yesterday is consistent with his remarks at the Cabinet meeting on October 13."
Sung asked, "He did not ask AI about state governance, but examined the facts of legal provisions using AI. He asked Gemini about constitutional and statutory provisions and shared what his thoughts were regarding them," questioning, "Does reporting this as 'an unprecedented case of citing AI responses as the basis for state governance' really accord with the facts?"
A Cheong Wa Dae official also replied "That is correct" when asked, "Does that mean President Lee's post was not a word-for-word copy of Gemini's response?"
The official added that the phrasing in the post, "[arguments against attendance are] an unconstitutional far-fetched claim," was also an expression of President Lee's own thoughts.
