The film "The Assassin(s)" has successfully wrapped up its screening as the opening film of the 37th Singapore International Film Festival, overcoming political opposition.
"The Assassin(s)" was screened as the opening film at the opening ceremony of the 37th Singapore International Film Festival held on October 21. It drew an enthusiastic response from local audiences, dispelling concerns that existed prior to its release.
This came after the film had been embroiled in controversies regarding historical distortion following its domestic release, facing fierce criticism from the political sphere. The People Power Party even sent a letter to the Singapore film festival signed by all 109 of its lawmakers, demanding the withdrawal of "The Assassin(s)" as the opening film.
In response, the Singapore International Film Festival released an official statement on October 7, stating, "We are aware of the ongoing discussions surrounding the 37th festival opening film, 'The Assassin(s)'. SGIFF respects the creative vision of the filmmakers, and the work will remain as the opening film of the Singapore International Film Festival."
Despite the controversies, "The Assassin(s)" surpassed 3 million moviegoers nationwide within 20 days of its release driven by the strength of the film itself. Having surpassed 3.29 million viewers nationwide by October 21, it is expected to break even (approximately 3.3 million viewers) today (October 22).
