The film "The Assassin(s)" successfully concluded its opening screening at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival, overcoming opposition from political circles.
"The Assassin(s)" was screened as the opening film at the opening ceremony of the 37th Singapore International Film Festival held on October 21. Following the screening, it drew an enthusiastic response from local audiences, dispelling concerns that had preceded its showcase.
The reception was particularly notable as "The Assassin(s)" had been embroiled in controversy over allegations of historical distortion following its domestic release, drawing fierce criticism from political circles. The People Power Party even sent a letter to the Singapore International Film Festival under the names of all 109 of its lawmakers, demanding the withdrawal of "The Assassin(s)" as the opening film.
In response, the Singapore International Film Festival stated in an official release on October 7, "We are aware of the series of discussions surrounding 'The Assassin(s)', the opening film of the 37th festival," and affirmed, "SGIFF respects the creative vision of the filmmakers behind 'The Assassin(s)', and the work will be screened as the opening film of the Singapore International Film Festival as scheduled."
Despite the controversy, "The Assassin(s)" surpassed 3 million admissions nationwide within 20 days of release through the strength of the film itself. Having surpassed 3.29 million viewers nationwide as of October 21, the film is expected to cross its break-even point (approximately 3.3 million admissions) today (October 22).
