Rob Jetten, 39, the first openly LGBTQ+ prime minister of the Netherlands, is expecting a child through surrogacy next year, AFP reported on October 19 (local time).

Prime Minister Jetten posted a photo on Instagram of himself and his fiancé, Nicolas Keenan, holding a fetal ultrasound image, writing, "Someone very special is on the way. See you in 2027, little one."

He said, "I cannot express in words my gratitude to the egg donor and surrogate mother Lisa, as well as both of their families. None of this would have been possible without you."

Prime Minister Jetten got engaged in 2024 to Keenan, an Argentine field hockey player.

After the center-left D66 party, which he leads, won last year's general election, he became the youngest prime minister in Dutch history in February of this year, as well as the first to identify as a sexual minority.

His party, D66, stated that both the surrogate mother and the egg donor are Dutch individuals known to the couple, adding, "This is not commercial surrogacy."

The Netherlands permits non-commercial surrogacy, where no financial compensation is exchanged.

In Germany, which strictly regulates surrogacy, Jens Spahn, 46, parliamentary leader of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), revealed in July that he had children through surrogacy, which led to controversy and his eventual resignation.

Spahn, who married his same-sex partner Daniel Funke, 45, in 2017, had children through surrogacy in the United States.

It is legally permitted in Germany to raise children born through surrogacy abroad.

However, because the center-right CDU officially opposes surrogacy as a party platform, and given Spahn's past record of blocking the legalization of surrogacy when he served as health minister, the situation sparked accusations of hypocrisy.
