The Korea Media and Communications Standards Commission (KMCSC) announced that it will conduct intensive monitoring of hate, mockery, and discriminatory content spreading among youth on social media in the form of short-form videos and "memes."

In a press release on October 20, the commission explained that the measure comes amid growing concerns that such posts, amplified by platform algorithms, could adversely affect the daily lives and values of young people.

According to the KMCSC, there have been 625 cases from April to October in which it requested corrective measures, such as deletion or access blocking, for malicious hate, mockery, and discrimination targeting specific groups or socially marginalized demographics.

The commission added that it has urged platform operators to implement voluntary measures to curb distribution, while also conducting media ethics education programs for high school students.

However, the KMCSC noted that it will comprehensively evaluate the overall context of posts during deliberations to prevent legitimate criticism or satire from being chilled.
