Christiane Amanpour, the 68-year-old veteran anchor for U.S. broadcaster CNN, is leaving the network after 43 years.

According to the Associated Press on the 19th (local time), Amanpour released a statement saying she decided to leave CNN after months of deliberation.

Amanpour plans to officially step down after hosting her eponymous international news program, "Amanpour," until May of next year.

Although she did not disclose specific reasons for her departure, the timing of her decision—coinciding with Skydance, led by David Ellison, who has close ties to President Donald Trump, acquiring CNN's parent company—has sparked speculation regarding a potential shift in the broadcaster's editorial stance.

Previously, President Trump revoked White House press credentials for three media outlets, including CNN, last month, accusing them of publishing unfavorable reports about his administration and the Republican Party.

Joining CNN in 1983, Amanpour gained widespread prominence as a war correspondent, vividly delivering on-the-ground reports from conflict zones such as the 1990 Gulf War and the Bosnian War.

She subsequently served as a correspondent and international news anchor, reporting from conflict zones and interviewing major figures around the world, including world leaders.

Amanpour is also famous for refusing a demand to wear a headscarf ahead of an interview with the Iranian president.

In September 2022, Amanpour was scheduled to interview then-Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who was visiting New York, but the interview was ultimately canceled after she refused a request from an Iranian official to wear a hijab.

At the time, Iran was swept by protests following the suspicious death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained for allegedly failing to properly wear a hijab.

Born to an Iranian father and a British mother, Amanpour has said that her upbringing afforded her the privilege of viewing the world through dual perspectives, according to the AP.
