The start signal sounds, but instead of running, the athletes casually walk off the course.

They staged a protest after a transgender athlete who previously competed in the boys' division transferred to race in the girls' division.

About half of the 24 total competitors reportedly gave up on the race entirely.

Even parents turned out holding placards, and some clashed with school security personnel.

While Washington state regulations allow athletes to compete according to their gender identity, controversy over fairness surrounding the policy continues.
