Long-hitter Jung Chan-min overcame adverse weather conditions caused by heavy rain delays to secure a wire-to-wire victory at the KPGA Tour The Charity Classic (total purse of 1 billion won), claiming his third career victory.
Playing in the final fourth round of the tournament held today (October 18) at the Valley and Seowon courses (par 72) of Seowon Valley Country Club in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Jung struggled with one birdie, three bogeys, and a double bogey, shooting a 4-over-par 76.
With a final total of 19-under-par 269, Jung narrowly fended off a fierce late charge by Shin Sang-hun (18-under-par 270) by a single stroke to clinch his first victory of this season.
The winner's prize is 200 million won.
After claiming his maiden career victory at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in May 2023 and topping the leaderboard at the Golfzon-Toray Open in November of the same year, Jung earned his third career win nearly three years later.
Starting the fourth round at 23-under-par, Jung maintained pars through holes 1 to 7 before dropping a stroke with his first bogey on the 8th hole (par 4), finishing the front nine 1-over.
Jung dropped two more strokes amid intensifying rain with a double bogey on the 10th hole (par 4).
Compounding the difficulties, adverse weather conditions turned heavy, forcing play to be suspended at 1:22 PM.
Play eventually resumed at 3:00 PM as the rain subsided, but Jung continued to struggle to lower his score.
Resuming on the 11th hole (par 5), Jung carded a bogey before grabbing his first birdie of the day on the 13th hole (par 3).
However, another bogey on the 16th hole (par 5) left Jung chased by a two-stroke margin from Shin Sang-hun and Kim Baek-jun, who tied for second place, as he headed into the final 18th hole.
After Kim Baek-jun holed out with a par, Shin Sang-hun sank a birdie to pressure Jung within a single stroke.
Facing a situation where a bogey would force a playoff, Jung calmly closed out the match with a par to seal his third career victory.
