President Lee Jae-myung, accompanied by First Lady Kim Hye-kyung, attended the ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising held at Busan City Hall.
The ceremony is held to honor the spirit of the Buma Democratic Uprising, a pro-democracy movement in the Busan and Masan regions against the Yushin dictatorship in 1979. This marks the eighth ceremony held since Buma Democratic Uprising Memorial Day was designated a national anniversary in 2019.
About 650 people attended the ceremony, including Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul, Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo, representatives of organizations related to the Buma Democratic Uprising, civic groups, and ordinary citizens.
In his commemorative address, President Lee will emphasize that the democracy we take for granted today did not come naturally, and that the courageous voices of citizens pushed back dictatorship and illuminated the dawn of democracy, Cheong Wa Dae said.
President Lee also plans to reflect on the significance of the Buma Democratic Uprising as an indispensable event in South Korean history and a great milestone in the history of democracy.
The event will feature a musical depicting the uprising, followed by a performance by the rock band Boohwal. At the conclusion of the ceremony, all attendees will join together to sing the song "Morning Dew."
