Anthropic, which is pursuing an initial public offering (IPO), announced that it posted strong growth in the third quarter; however, expectations for its corporate value have dropped significantly due to the growth pace not matching previous levels, Reuters reported on the 15th (local time), citing anonymous sources.
According to Reuters, Anthropic stated at a pre-IPO investor presentation held at its headquarters in San Francisco, U.S., on the 14th that its third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion (approx. 22.5 trillion won), marking a 45% increase from the previous quarter, and that it also recorded an operating profit for the second consecutive quarter.
This disclosure of financial status was intended to showcase its growth momentum to investors ahead of its listing targeted for next month.
While the announced earnings somewhat alleviated concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) development costs, some reportedly expressed disappointment over the slowing revenue growth.
This was viewed as a deceleration compared to the previous surge, where revenue more than doubled from $4.7 billion in the first quarter of this year to $11.6 billion in the second quarter.
Consequently, three sources stated that some investors discussed Anthropic's corporate value at around $1.5 trillion (approx. 2,013 trillion won).
This is a sharp decrease from the initial expectation of about $2 trillion (approx. 2,680 trillion won).
If the market's response to Anthropic's IPO is lukewarm, it could have a negative impact on the overall AI market.
Investors believe that the short-term outlook for the AI market will heavily depend on the success of Anthropic's IPO and OpenAI's anticipated listing next year.
Anthropic originally planned an October listing, but with the schedule pushed back slightly, the possibility of a listing after the midterms in November is growing.
