U.S. President Donald Trump will visit the Philippines to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit before traveling to China next month.
The Philippine presidential office announced on the 14th local time that President Trump is scheduled to visit the capital city of Manila to attend next month's ASEAN Summit.
Claire Castro, a spokesperson for the Philippine presidential office, stated during a press conference that President Trump's attendance at the ASEAN Summit has been "confirmed."
The 49th ASEAN Summit and related events will be held from November 16 to 18 in the Philippines, this year's ASEAN chair country.
This will be President Trump's first visit to the Philippines in nine years, following his attendance at the 2017 ASEAN Summit.
A U.S. official recently told the U.S. media outlet New York Post that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos had invited President Trump to visit his country.
President Trump is also scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting held in Shenzhen, China, from November 18 to 19 of the same month.
Last October, President Trump also attended the ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and the APEC Summit held in Gyeongju, South Korea, consecutively in efforts to maintain U.S. influence in Asia.
ASEAN consists of 11 member states, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste.
