President Lee Jae-myung visited the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency today (October 13) and called for a swift, thorough investigation and follow-up measures regarding the stabbing incident at a hypermarket in Incheon.

Cheong Wa Dae stated that President Lee visited Incheon immediately after returning to the capital area from Busan—where he attended a welcoming ceremony for a test voyage along the Arctic shipping route and visited the plaque-unveiling ceremony of HMM headquarters—and received a briefing from Yoo Seung-ryeol, head of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, on the circumstances of the incident, the progress of the investigation, and the condition of the victims.

Also attending the meeting were Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency Kim Jong-chul, Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik, Policy Chief Ha Jun-kyung, and Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs Han Chan-sik.

President Lee instructed officials to "devise extraordinary measures against violent crimes that inflict severe harm on innocent citizens and the vulnerable, and threaten the peaceful daily lives of the public."

He also stressed that "protecting the lives and safety of the people is the police's most fundamental and vital duty," urging them to "prepare effective measures to prevent recurrences of similar incidents and concentrate all capabilities on crime prevention and rapid response."

In addition, he called for using this incident as an opportunity to thoroughly inspect the overall management and supervision system for individuals wearing electronic monitoring ankle bracelets, to formulate fundamental improvements for any identified problems, and to pay special attention to necessary support, including the treatment, recovery, and personal protection of the victims.
