Police have launched an internal investigation into the death of a suspect who passed away while being held in a detention center.
The Incheon Provincial Police Agency's inspection division announced today (October 13) that it has initiated an inspection of four staff members working at the detention center of the Incheon Seobu Police Station.
Previously on October 5, a man in his 40s, identified as A, was found unconscious in a shower room at the Incheon Seobu Police Station, where he was being held on special robbery charges.
A was transported to a hospital while receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but ultimately died.
Police plan to investigate whether the on-duty staff at the detention center properly managed the suspect according to relevant guidelines.
A had been in custody on charges of luring a victim under the pretext of cryptocurrency trading along with an accomplice, making the victim drink a beverage containing drugs, and stealing 35 million won in cash.
A police official explained, "To avoid controversies over fairness, the inspection division of the Incheon Provincial Police Agency directly took charge of the investigation," adding, "We have been verifying the facts since right after the incident occurred and transitioned to a full-scale inspection starting yesterday."
