▲ A woman in her 40s being dragged by a man reported for stalking
It has been revealed that a woman in her 40s, who was murdered by a man reported for stalking and other offenses in Jeju, had previously filed a report regarding sexual violence.
According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency and other sources on October 13, the suspect in his 60s, surnamed A, who is facing murder charges, was reported by the victim, woman B, for sexual violence back in March.
Woman B reported that man A had threatened to distribute explicit videos of her. However, the case was closed due to insufficient evidence after B failed to attend the victim interview.
In October of last year, woman B also reported man A for stalking, but the police did not formally accept the case.
The police explained that the victim once again failed to actively cooperate with the investigation and did not wish for the perpetrator to be punished.
However, under the Anti-Stalking Act, the provision allowing offenses to go unpunished against the victim's will has been abolished, meaning that once a report is filed, police must process the case regardless of whether the victim desires punishment.
Nevertheless, because the sexual violence and stalking reports were closed, the police stated they were unable to take provisional measures such as issuing a restraining order against man A.
Subsequently, multiple related reports continued, including a dating violence report filed in May. Last month, the police provided B with a smart watch and managed her as a safety-secured individual due to concerns over potential retaliatory harm.
However, at around 1:40 a.m. yesterday (October 12), after being ambushed by man A, woman B was killed on the street in front of a hotel in Yeondong, Jeju City, without even being able to press the emergency button on her smart watch.
