It was belatedly revealed that Hong Kong police have launched an investigation after the urn of the late legendary Hong Kong actor and singer Anita Mui went missing.
According to local media outlets on the 12th (local time), the Anita Mui International Fan Club released a statement in the name of her family on the 10th, stating that police have been investigating the suspected theft of Mui's urn for three months without making any progress.
On July 18, a fan visiting the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island in Hong Kong discovered that the urn was missing and notified the family. Following the report, the Lantau serious crime investigation team has been looking into the case, but no arrests have been made yet.
The family stated that they have not received any extortion calls demanding money and appealed for tips that could help locate the urn.
The news became known around Mui's birthday (October 10), delivering a major shock to her fans.
While the Po Lin Monastery is a popular tourist destination with many visitors, the family reportedly requested a quiet resting place, meaning no photograph of Mui was attached to the urn, and only her nickname was inscribed instead of her name.
The Po Lin Monastery declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
In Hong Kong last year, a man was arrested in connection with a case suspected of involving the theft of the urn of martial arts director Liu Chia-liang, who worked on the film "Drunken Master II."
Mui, often called the "Madonna of Asia," led the golden age of Hong Kong cinema alongside stars like Leslie Cheung and Chow Yun-fat. She revealed her battle with cervical cancer in 2003 and passed away on December 30 of that year at the age of 40.
