U.S. President Donald Trump hit back at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 10 (local time), saying Ukraine needs a new president after Zelenskyy criticized a "diesel deal" in which Trump agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel to the United States.

Speaking to reporters at the White House that day, Trump criticized Zelenskyy, saying, "Zelenskyy could have ended this war many times, but chose not to."

He continued, "We told Zelenskyy, 'Do whatever you want regarding Russia, but do not attack Russian refineries because it causes global problems.' But he wants to cause problems for the world and for our farmers and ranchers."

Trump stated that despite his warnings, Ukraine continued to attack Russian refining facilities, adding, "They better stop right now."

Emphasizing his point, Trump said, "You know what I'm suggesting to Ukraine? To get a new leader who can make a (peace) deal. Ukraine has lost 30% of its territory and over 1 million people have lost their lives. That war should never have started, and I think it is time for Ukraine to have a new president."

The previous day, Trump announced via social media platform Truth Social that he had agreed with Putin for Russia to immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. and global markets, followed by additional supplies, totaling 4.8 million tons.

Following the announcement, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced measures temporarily easing sanctions on the sale of Russian diesel.

In response, President Zelenskyy criticized President Trump, calling the agreement a "gift" from Trump to Putin and stating, "Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is equivalent to investing in prolonging a war that should be ended."
