A taxi crossed the centerline and plowed into a sidewalk in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Caused by drowsy driving, the sudden vehicle crash resulted in the death of a man in his 40s who was with his wife.

Plastic cones and safety tape are cordoned off across the middle of the sidewalk, and a shaded rest area structure has its pillars ripped out and is cleared away overturned.
At around 9:00 p.m. yesterday (October 9), a taxi driven by a driver in his 70s crashed onto the sidewalk in front of Children's Grand Park Station on Subway Line 7 in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul.
The accident vehicle crossed the centerline, struck a crosswalk post at this location, and only came to a stop after plunging onto the sidewalk and striking the victims.

A man in his 40s sitting on a bench under a shelter shade was struck by the taxi and killed, while his wife who was next to him sustained head injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The taxi driver, A, and a passenger were not injured, but because many citizens were waiting for the traffic signal at the time of the accident, it could have resulted in an even greater loss of life.
Police have booked driver A on charges of causing death under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, and A is known to have stated during questioning that the accident occurred while driving drowsy.
However, investigations showed that tests for alcohol or drugs came back negative.
Police are reviewing whether to request an arrest warrant for A.

At around 5:40 p.m. yesterday, a passenger car rear-ended a 3.5-ton cargo truck that had broken down and stopped near the Geumgwang Tunnel on the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.
The accident resulted in the death of the passenger car driver, a woman in her 50s.
Police are investigating the specific circumstances of the accident.
