SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited the site of the Gwangju military airport, designated for the Honam semiconductor cluster, and stated, "If we determine that construction is feasible, we will build it at the fastest possible pace and to the maximum extent."
Speaking to reporters at the military airport this afternoon, Chairman Chey expressed his commitment to pushing the project forward with a sense of urgency, saying, "As semiconductor demand is growing at a rapid pace now, our current priority is to accelerate the supply speed to catch up with it."
He added, "Since we need to conduct more studies to determine the exact timeline, I cannot give you a specific date today, but we will move as quickly as possible."
He explained, "We project that semiconductor demand will continue to grow at a fairly rapid pace. Consequently, additional sites and development will be necessary, and circumstances may arise where we must even build them concurrently if needed."
"That is why we came here today to inspect how quickly we can build it," Chairman Chey said. "The Mayor is preparing diligently, and the national government is ensuring that water and electricity infrastructure are put in place. We need to recalculate factors such as aligning our construction schedule with those plans, and I think those details will likely be announced."
He further noted, "Even if the supply of water and power is delayed, my thought is to move in first if we can manage to match the timing. Up to now, we are planning a scale equivalent to about two-thirds of the Yongin complex. If more land is available and demand increases further, it is entirely possible that this site could become even larger."
