A man in his 70s, identified as A, died after falling into a freight elevator shaft on the third floor of a confectionery and bakery manufacturing plant in Namdong-gu, Incheon, at around 4:30 p.m. today (October 8).

A sustained severe injuries from the accident and was transported to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, but ultimately passed away.

Police believe that A stepped into the shaft area without realizing that the elevator had already descended, causing him to fall onto the top of the elevator on the first floor.

It was confirmed that A had worked long-term at the factory before retiring and subsequently returning as a daily worker.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to determine whether to apply the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act by investigating factory officials to verify whether safety guidelines were properly followed.
