▲ Democratic Party Floor Leader Han Byung-do and fellow party lawmakers hold signs calling for the resignation of People Power Party Representative Lee Jin-sook during a general party meeting at the National Assembly on August 26, claiming that Lee distorted and denigrated the May 18 Democratization Movement.

Han Byung-do, the floor leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, criticized Representative Lee Jin-sook of the ruling People Power Party, who introduced a bill to disclose the list of persons of merit and bereaved families of the May 18 Democratization Movement, calling it "truly despicable politics with blatantly impure motives."

During a meeting on strategies for the parliamentary audit held at the National Assembly today (October 8), Floor Leader Han stated, "The People Power Party's denigration of May 18 has moved beyond absurd remarks to legislative revision."

Han pointed out, "Disclosing the list is an obvious violation of the Personal Information Protection Act and constitutes secondary harm," adding, "It merely follows the demands of far-right groups seeking to stigmatize May 18 victims and target them for attacks."

He continued, "People Power Party Leader Jang Dong-hyeok and Representatives Na Kyung-won and Kim Tae-gyu were also named as co-sponsors of this amendment," urging, "This can no longer be dismissed as an individual aberration. The People Power Party must clearly answer what its official position is."

Han added, "The People Power Party should immediately withdraw the amendment and prostrate in apology before the spirits of May, the persons of merit, and the bereaved families," emphasizing, "The Democratic Party will without fail stop this legislation, which incites historical distortion and secondary harm."
