The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) has decided to reconvene its board of directors as early as this month to recommend a candidate for the next commissioner.

The KBO held a board meeting consisting of the presidents of its 10 clubs this morning (October 7) to discuss the procedures for appointing the next commissioner.

The board agreed that each club will recommend various candidates, including current Commissioner Huh Koo-youn, and a final candidate will be determined at a subsequent board meeting to be held as early as this month.

According to KBO regulations, the commissioner is recommended through the consent of at least three-fourths of the incumbent board members, elected by a three-fourths or greater approval of the general assembly consisting of all member clubs, and then reported to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the competent government authority.

While recommendation is the responsibility of the board, the election is conducted by the general assembly, which is composed of the owners or proxy owners of the 10 clubs.

Among the current 10 club board members, four presidents—Yoo Jeong-keun of Samsung, Park Jong-tae of Hanwha, Wi Jae-min of Kiwoom, and Ko Young-sup of Doosan—also serve as club owners or proxy owners, allowing them to exercise both the right to recommend and the right to elect the commissioner.

Commissioner Huh Koo-youn, a former baseball figure, took office as the 24th KBO chief in March 2022 following the resignation of former Commissioner Chung Ji-taek. After serving out the remainder of Chung's term, Huh was reappointed to a three-year term as the 25th commissioner in November 2023 through a unanimous written resolution by the KBO's highest decision-making body, the general assembly.

Commissioner Huh's current term runs until the end of this year.
