President Lee Jae-myung emphasized during a Cabinet meeting this morning (the 6th) that "we must recognize the current situation with utmost gravity and maintain extraordinary vigilance."
As hacking methods become more sophisticated with the development of artificial intelligence technology, he called for a complete innovation of the security paradigm.
[President Lee Jae-myung: We must build security capabilities to detect attacks in advance and preemptively block them. We must promptly inspect the security systems of the private sector as well as national core systems as a whole...]
Measures to prevent the spread of this incident were also discussed at a preceding related ministers' meeting.
[Han Seong-sook / Prime Minister: This situation is deeply concerning, as it could spread beyond the financial sector to the industrial, government, and public sectors.]
The police announced that they have booked the recent financial sector hacking case as a "violation of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, Etc." and launched a formal investigation.
The Cyber Terror Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency was designated as the dedicated investigation team, deploying 28 investigators.
The police plan to clearly uncover through the investigation the identity of the hacking forces and the intrusion routes, as well as what specific information was actually leaked and to what extent.
The police are also examining whether this incident is a matter that must be reported to the Major Crime Investigation Office.
The Major Crime Investigation Office Act stipulates that upon recognizing a major crime, it must be immediately reported to the Head of the Major Crime Investigation Office, and authorities are examining whether this incident falls under major crimes.
The police explained that while the financial institutions affected by the hacking are not included in "national core infrastructure," if they fall under "electronic financial infrastructure," it must be reported to the Major Crime Investigation Office, prompting them to request an official interpretation from the Financial Services Commission.
