The military's final investigation concluded that last month's landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was caused by mines laid south of the Military Demarcation Line by North Korean troops. Accordingly, the South Korean military launched an operation to detonate North Korean landmines confirmed to be buried in the area. Defense Minister Kang shin emphasized that the mine-clearing operation is "the first of its kind in the history of our DMZ" and described it as a resolute response. Nevertheless, analysts note that the military is moderating the level of its response compared to the 2015 wooden-box landmine explosion. This approach is seen as matching the tone set by President Lee, who referred to the blast as an 'untoward accident' in his Armed Forces Day address on October 1. Appearing on SBS's "Discovery of Knowledge," former Special Warfare Commander Chun In-bum commented on the situation, saying, "I feel very disappointed and hurt."
