President Lee Jae-myung hosted a luncheon with the acting heads of the Prosecution Agency, the Major Crimes Investigation Agency, and the National Police Agency, calling for the smooth establishment of the newly launched criminal justice system and the fair and strict enforcement of law and order, it was learned.
According to SBS reporting, President Lee had lunch today (October 6) at Cheong Wa Dae following a Cabinet meeting with acting head of the Prosecution Agency Lee Jeong-hyeon (Deputy Chief Prosecutor), acting head of the Major Crimes Investigation Agency Jeon Jong-min (Deputy Chief), and acting head of the National Police Agency Kim Jong-cheol (Deputy Chief).
Prime Minister Han Seong-sook was also reported to have attended the luncheon.
A key Cheong Wa Dae official explained, "It was a meeting to emphasize to the newly launched agencies the purpose and meaning of prosecution reform and a criminal justice system for the people."
President Lee is understood to have particularly urged investigative authorities to align with key principles, including the purpose of separating investigation and indictment, strict and impartial law enforcement, and human rights protection.
Earlier, during the 43rd Cabinet meeting held at Cheong Wa Dae today, President Lee stated that past authority over investigations, indictments, and the maintenance of prosecutions had been concentrated within the prosecution service to the point of being abused, calling the launch of the Prosecution Agency and the Major Crimes Investigation Agency a "historic decision by the people."
Noting that citizens sometimes harbor doubts about whether there is justice in the nation, President Lee addressed the Major Crimes Investigation Agency, saying, "Regardless of side or ruling and opposition parties, I ask that you strictly and thoroughly investigate criminal acts committed by the powerful—the so-called social leadership class who are highly educated and possess substantial wealth—without the slightest hesitation."
He also stressed the need to thoroughly uncover the truth behind cases that raise public doubt, ensuring that no one suffers wrongful harm and no one gains unfair advantages in the process.
