Sweden's Karolinska Institute Nobel Assembly announced on the 5th local time that it has selected three scientists—Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel—as the co-winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The Nobel Assembly explained that they were awarded for their discoveries regarding light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

This year's Nobel Prize announcements begin today with the Physiology or Medicine prize, followed by the Physics prize on the 6th, Chemistry prize on the 7th, Literature prize on the 8th, Peace prize on the 9th, and the Economic Sciences prize on the 12th, spanning six categories in total.
