A prison sentence has been handed down to an inmate who stuffed underwear and other items into a detention cell toilet, causing water to overflow, and assaulted police officers.
Judge Lee Ho-yeon of Criminal Division 11 at the Busan District Court sentenced a man in his 40s, surnamed A, to six months in prison on charges of obstruction of official duties.
A was put on trial for obstructing police officers from performing their detention duties by assaulting two officers at around 4:15 a.m. on April 16 at the detention facility of the Busan Dongrae Police Station.
At the time, A stuffed toilet paper and underwear into the toilet of a protective cell, clogging it three times, which resulted in bathroom water overflowing across the entire detention area.
When an officer uncuffed him to move him to another protective cell, A struck the officer in the face with his fist once.
He also kicked another officer in the left knee who approached to restrain him.
A had previously served time for offenses including nighttime intrusion into structures and was released on March 19, committing this latest crime less than a month later.
Judge Lee stated, "Given the circumstances and methods of the crime, the nature of the offense is severe, and the culpability is high as the crime was committed during a repeated-offense probation period while he was already confined in a detention cell."
