Following BTS, K-pop representative group Stray Kids has also joined the boycott of the Grammy Awards.
According to Billboard, the BBC, and other local media outlets on the 2nd (local time), JYP Entertainment announced that Stray Kids did not submit their music for consideration for the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards.
This decision came less than a day after the Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards, announced that it would push ahead with presenting an award in the Asian Pop category.
Stray Kids was considered a strong contender for the Asian Pop category, having topped Billboard's main album chart, the Billboard 200, nine times—second only to the Beatles for the most number-one albums.
All eight members also hold Grammy voting rights.
The BBC reported that the boycott by Stray Kids would be a significant blow to the Grammys.
As two leading contenders have announced consecutive boycotts, attention is now focused on whether other K-pop artists might follow suit.
Hongjoong, the leader of the group Ateez, recently stated in an interview with Variety, "Personally, I somewhat sympathize with BTS's stance," adding, "I would also like to think about that issue myself."
The Grammys sparked major controversy last June by announcing the creation of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category (hereafter Asian Pop), which separately classifies music from Asian regions such as Korea, China, and Japan.
Critics have pointed out that this appears to be an attempt to segregate K-pop by creating a special category rather than a main category, even though K-pop has already gained global popularity and entered the mainstream music scene.
In particular, BTS immediately declared a boycott, stating, "We hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is rather than being categorized by region or language."
Although the Grammys seemed to take a step back by suggesting the Asian Pop category could be revised, they reversed course the previous day, claiming that voices supporting the creation of the Asian Pop category were stronger, and solidified their stance to proceed with the category at next year's ceremony.
