An artificial intelligence chatbot launched by the U.S. federal government provided answers contradicting President Donald Trump's usual claims, only to begin refusing to answer certain questions a day later, AFP reported on October 1 (local time).

President Trump announced the launch of "America.gov," a federal government AI chatbot website, on September 29, boasting that the chatbot was "very good."

However, the chatbot gave answers that ran counter to President Trump's false claims regarding sensitive issues such as the results of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.

Shortly after its launch, when asked, "Was there widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election?", the chatbot replied, "Official federal government assessments following the 2020 presidential election found no evidence of voter fraud on a scale that would have altered the outcome."

Regarding this, the think tank Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) analyzed that on its first day, the chatbot "refuted false narratives and political frames regarding immigration and elections that the administration has actively propagated, based on official government records and facts."

It added, "Initial analysis showed that it provided evidence-based answers grounded in government records, even when the content conflicted with the claims of Trump and his administration."

Democratic lawmakers shared these responses from the chatbot.

Senator Adam Schiff posted a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) of the chatbot's response stating that former President Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, writing, "Finally, a straight answer from someone in the Trump administration."

However, by the second day of its launch, the chatbot changed its stance on the same questions.

The chatbot evaded answering by stating, "I do not provide political opinions or analyses on past elections."

AFP reported that it remains unclear whether the Trump administration modified the settings to prevent the chatbot from contradicting the president's claims.

A White House official said in a statement to AFP, "America.gov will be continuously updated to provide Americans with the most accurate and reliable federal information and resources."

The chatbot serves as a "one-stop platform" consolidating various services and civil complaint information posted across some 29,000 U.S. federal agency websites.

It operates based on two AI agents: SpaceXAI's Grok and Google's Gemini.
