A transparency center designed to support fact-checking activities on false and distorted information and assist in the supervision of large-scale information and communications service providers was launched on October 1.
The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) and the Community Media Foundation announced that the Information and Communications Services Transparency Center was officially launched on the same day to prevent the distribution of false and distorted information.
The legal ground for the Transparency Center was established under the revised Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, which took effect in July, and the center is tasked with supporting the enforcement of the law to reduce social harms caused by false and distorted information.
The center will conduct tasks such as supporting fact-checking activities by fact-checking organizations, operating and supporting databases, providing related research and education, and fostering international cooperation.
It will also assist in verifying transparency reports submitted by large-scale information and communications service providers.
KMCC Chairman Kim Jong-chul said, "We will examine whether large-scale information and communications service providers are faithfully fulfilling their legal obligations, while supporting fact-checking activities and respecting private-sector independence and autonomy," adding, "We will make every effort to foster a transparent and trustworthy online information environment."
