Singer Kim Yeon-ja opened up about her 52-year singing career.
Appearing on the tvN variety show "You Quiz on the Block" broadcast on September 30, Kim Yeon-ja shared that although she was a first-generation Hallyu singer who performed across Japan, Brazil, Cuba, Russia, and beyond, she had nothing left to her name when wrapping up her overseas activities and returning to South Korea. She confessed, "My ex-husband was also the head of the agency. I hoped to bring back at least a little bit, but he told me his hands were empty."
Afterward, she entered a second prime as "Amor Fati" experienced a massive climb back up the charts. Kim Yeon-ja said, "I spent days that were hard to believe and filled with gratitude. I had a 20-year hiatus in South Korea, but 'Amor Fati' filled that entire void. Thanks to that song, my musical life seems to have broadened." She went on to surprise the cast by revealing, "I perform at festival stages all across the country. We travel split between two cars with the dance team, and during busy times, gas alone costs about 600,000 won a day."
She also shared an episode related to performing at university festivals. Recalling the 2018 Pusan National University festival that went viral for the students' passionate sing-along, Kim Yeon-ja said, "When the request first came in, I was doubtful. I went there worried, but the response was incredible." Later, when Kim Yeon-ja appeared on a program where 300 people took the stage together, 150 Pusan National University students stepped up to support her, and she has continued that special bond by returning to the university's festival and donating scholarships.
Reflecting on the past years, Kim Yeon-ja stated, "I always want to tell myself that I did well. Even at a young age, I navigated through hardships, and I made it this far because the people around me helped. As long as my voice holds out, I think I will continue living this kind of life." Mentioning her mother, who is currently battling Parkinson's disease, she added, "She suffered so much when she was young. If a miracle happens, I hope she can stand before us in good health once again."
Celebrating her 52nd debut anniversary this year, Kim Yeon-ja released her new single on September 30, the day the episode aired.
