More pleasant news has come from the women's doubles. Lee So-hee and Baek Ha-na secured a comeback victory against the world's number one Chinese team after a tight match, claiming the gold medal for the first time in 24 years.

A classic match befitting a final between the world's top two ranked pairs unfolded.

Facing world number one Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China, Lee So-hee and Baek Ha-na lost the first game after an intense seven deuces, but they did not waver.

Displaying solid teamwork built over nearly four years, they claimed the second game to level the match.

Down 11-10, they faced a major crisis when Lee So-hee collapsed while defending, appearing to suffer from leg cramps. However, Lee got back up and Baek Ha-na ran that much harder, keeping the match close until the very end.

Then, trouble struck the opponents.

As we tied the score at 18-18, China's Liu Shengshu collapsed, clutching her leg.

With both teams physically exhausted, Lee and Baek used their final burst of concentration to score three consecutive points and seal the victory.

After an exhausting battle lasting over an hour and 50 minutes, all four players collapsed onto the court.

Shaking off the disappointment of their silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago, Lee and Baek became the first South Koreans to win the women's doubles gold medal in 24 years. After comforting Liu Shengshu, who received treatment for a long time, they celebrated their joy with their signature piggyback ceremony.

[Baek Ha-na / National Badminton Team : We had a chance back in Hangzhou as well, and now after delaying it by three or four years, we seem to have broken that record. I think it is such an honor, and I am just so happy.]

[Lee So-hee / National Badminton Team : Among the four of us, I think cramps started coming up in my back thigh first. Honestly, quite literally, the only thought on my mind was, 'Let's just endure this.']

Following their victory over the same opponents at the world championships last month, Lee and Baek secured another major title, cementing their status as the new powerhouses.
